Take notice that pursuant to Section 217 of the Municipal Act, 2001, S.O. 2001, c.25, the Corporation of the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet is considering a proposal to reduce the size of the municipal council from 7 members, being 6 councillors and a mayor, to 5 members, being 4 councillors and a mayor.
On January 1st, 1997, the Township of Alfred, the Village of Alfred, the Township of North Plantagenet, and the Village of Plantagenet were amalgamated to create the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet, with the 20 elected officials at the time forming the interim council. Following the election of November 1997, the council was reduced to 7 members, within the existing 4 wards. In 2016, the council of the day voted to eliminate 2 of the 4 wards, thus creating Ward 1, comprised of Alfred, Lefaivre and Treadwell, and Ward 2, comprised of Curran, Pendleton, Plantagenet, and Wendover. The current proposal would not alter the existing Ward structure but would reduce the number of councilors per ward. Specifically, if adopted, the proposal would reduce the size of council to 5 members, being 2 councilors for Ward 1 and 2 councilors for Ward 2, in addition to the mayor.
Residents of the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet are invited to share their opinion on this important matter by completing a short survey between August 6th, 2021, and September 10th, 2021 via the following link. The link is also available through the municipal Facebook page.
