Our green spaces are at your disposal to take time to take the time. Have a picnic, read a book, take a walk or have a coffee with someone you care about.

We ask that all users show respect for our beautiful territory and refrain from littering. Some sites do not have garbage and recycling bins. Please be conscious of the environment to preserve the beauty of the area for all visitors.

Alfred Lagoon 

The bird observation tower located at the Alfred lagoons allows you a view on hundreds of migratory birds, both in the spring and in the fall. Bring a snack and have a picnic.

Larocque Woods

The Township of Alfred and Plantagenet has invested in the creation of over 3 km of trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter, as well as walking/hiking trails in the summer.

Dogs on leashes are permitted ONLY on hiking trails, however owners must pick up after their pets. Dogs are not permitted without a leash.

The trails are open to all from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and do not require a pass.

There are public washrooms at the Larocque Park Community Centre, and chemical toilets both outside the community centre and by the Alfred water tower. 

Parking

Parking is currently available at Larocque Park and at the Alfred Water Tower at no cost.

Rest Area

We are looking to improve the space with benches and more picnic tables over time.

Winter Activities

Borrow a fat bike, snowshoes, helmets, toboggans or any other equipment for free when visiting this location. Visit the Alfred Library in the Larocque Park to see what is available.

Summer Activities 

Borrow balls, helmets, tennis rackets, pickleball rackets and bicycles free of charge during your visit. Go to the Alfred's library in Larocque Park to see what's available.

Alfred Bog Walk

A peat bog represents a rare habitat to animal and bird species. The Alfred Bog, with its 10,000 acres of unique ecosystem is now managed by Ontario Parks as a Provincial Nature Reserve.

Where:  Follow Concession Road 11 south of Alfred and watch for the Alfred Bog signs.

Activities 

Walk the 0.273 km long boardwalk and admire this beautiful ecosystem.

Birdwatching is mesmerizing during nesting time and migration in the spring and fall.

Jessup's Falls Conservation Area

Jessup's Falls is a gateway to natural discovery. The area is managed by the South Nation Conservation. Enjoy a picnic and scenic views.

Rest areas include a picnic shelter, picnic tables, and a space for barbeque.

Activities

Chesser Park 

The Township of Alfred and Plantagenet has its own island for you to discover the beauty of the South Nation River and picnic with friends.

The large parking space at this park allows commuters to park during their work day. 

Rest Area 

This park offers a large shelter with electricity. There are also picnic tables, benches and garbage cans all through the park. 

Activities

This park is often used to launch kayaks into the South Nation River, and is a tranquil location to enjoy lunch on beautiful summer days.

Prescott Russell Recreation Trail

The recreational trail is a safe and multifunctional trail that crosses the entire territory of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell, located in Eastern Ontario between Ottawa and Montreal. With a total length of 72 km, the trail is primarily used in the winter for snowmobiling and in the summer for walking and biking.

Plantagenet and Alfred rest areas include a pavilion with shelter and picnic tables.

Rent an electric bicycle at Café sur la Rive in Plantagenet.

Waterfront Nation Park

The Waterfront Nation Park allows visitors to admire the South Nation River and the Prescott Russell Recreation Trail bridge crossing the river. This is a great spot for fishing and relaxing.

This is a great spot for fishing and relaxing. Its proximity to the Prescott Russell Recreation Trail allows visitors to take long walks or go cycling.
